I visited Anticosti Island last summer for a family vacation. My daughter and I traveled by car to Sept-Îles. We then took the plane for a thirty minutes flight to get to Port-Menier where my partner was waiting for us. We had only been on the island for a few minutes when we saw our first deers! How magnificent they are! And since they cohabit with the Anticostians, they are not frightened by humans. Those living outside the village, however, are more fearful, for their greater good since hunting is permitted in many areas of the island.
We had the pleasure of staying for more than a week with a friend. We regained the habit of taking the time. What's better than having your morning coffee on the edge of the bay watching the great blue herons go fishing offshore? Life on such a remote island is so different from city life!
We enjoyed our stay so much that my 11-year-old daughter made me promise, as we were returning to the mainland aboard the Bella-Desgagné, the boat that supplies many villages in Minganie and the Lower North Shore, to come back this summer! And it's a safe bet that it won't be our last!
